18th century coopered oak keg salvaged from the HMS Royal George 1756

HMS Royal George was a 100 gun first rate ship of the Royal Navy.  Flagship at the Battle of Quiberon Bay and took part in the Battle of Cape St Vincent.  Whilst undergoing maintenance work she sank on the 29 August 1782 with a loss of over 800 lives, one of the most serious British maritime losses.  This oak and iron bound  keg was salvaged from ship and bears a plaque commemorating the event.
